The modern day Mothers day celebration is mostly a US invention by Anna Jarvis that later spread to many other countries. It is observed on different days around the world typically in the months of March, April and May. The most popular date being the Second Sunday of May.
Kids make cards for their moms, give flowers and gifts and like to take their moms to lunch.

A new trend is that people honor their moms online as well and several people update their facebook page to show pictures of their moms!
What used to be a simple holiday to honor your mom has also become a day of large scale gift-giving with lots of retail sales. According to the National Retail Federation, in the US alone, consumer spending on Mother’s day is close $20 Billion.
